Design

Lifetime extension & durability

Designers can incorporate characteristics that enable products to serve their originally intended functions longer. Lifetime extension is the counter-strategy to planned obsolescence, in which products are designed to fail after a specific time.

There are multiple ways that a product’s lifetime (and value) can be extended:

  • Design for maintainability, reparability, reuse and remanufacture
  • Manufacture with high quality, durable materials and processes
  • Move from a product seller to a service provider

Identify and promote alternative uses for products that can no longer serve their original function
